As the world came together to celebrate World Tourism Day on 27th September, the theme "Tourism and Peace" took centre stage, underscoring tourism's profound role in fostering understanding, unity, and peace among diverse cultures and communities.

Since its inception in 1980, World Tourism Day has evolved to become a global celebration of the transformative power of travel. This annual event highlights the benefits of cultural exchange, economic prosperity, and the mutual understanding that tourism fosters.

Within this context, ASEAN continues to make significant strides in promoting and developing the tourism sector, advancing sustainable tourism practices, and preparing the region to emerge as a single, cohesive tourism destination under the captivating tagline, “A Destination for Every Dream.”

Promoting the tourism sector in ASEAN

ASEAN has been proactive in boosting the tourism sector through a series of strategic initiatives. The ASEAN Tourism Strategic Plan (ATSP) 2016-2025 provides a comprehensive framework to ensure sustainable and inclusive tourism growth. One of the flagship initiatives under this plan is the ASEAN Tourism Marketing Strategy (ATMS) 2021-2025, which aims to position ASEAN as a unified tourism destination, leveraging its rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and diverse attractions. The ATMS promotes joint marketing efforts, digital tourism campaigns, and collaborative projects to highlight the unique assets of each ASEAN Member State while presenting a unified brand to the world.

Under the marketing tagline, “A Destination for Every Dream,” ASEAN encapsulates the region’s diverse and inclusive tourism offerings. From the pristine beaches and cultural treasures to the vibrant cities and the historical landmarks, ASEAN offers something for every type of traveller.

This unified branding effort is designed to showcase ASEAN’s collective appeal while highlighting the unique attributes of each ASEAN Member State. By presenting ASEAN as a single destination, the region strives to attract a broader audience and enhance its global competitiveness in the tourism industry.

The recent tourism marketing initiative to create a metaverse game showcasing ASEAN destinations is a prime example of leveraging digital technology to engage a global audience. This interactive platform allows users to explore virtual representations of iconic landmarks and cultural sites, providing an immersive experience that promotes ASEAN’s tourism attractions in a novel way. The ImaginASEAN metaverse game, launched on World Tourism Day, marks ASEAN’s first foray into the metaverse and demonstrates the region’s commitment to embracing digital transformation. This strategic initiative serves as a testament to ASEAN’s steadfast commitment to bolstering tourism and cultural awareness, highlighting the pivotal role of tourism in fostering cultural exchange, driving economic growth, and nurturing mutual understanding among diverse communities.

Advancing sustainable tourism

Sustainable tourism stands as a cornerstone of ASEAN’s tourism development agenda as it is more than just about preserving the environment; it is about nurturing a competitive, inclusive, and dynamic tourism sector that fulfils the aspirations of every traveller. ASEAN is positioning itself as “A Destination for Every Dream,” where travellers can have diverse, unique, and meaningful experiences while promoting cultural preservation, environmental conservation, and economic growth. This holistic approach ensures that ASEAN remains a top choice for travellers worldwide, now and in the future.

The Action Roadmap for Sustainable Tourism Development in ASEAN, endorsed early this year, underscores the region’s commitment to balancing tourism growth with environmental preservation and social responsibility. This Roadmap emphasises sustainable practices that protect natural resources, promote cultural heritage, and benefit local communities.

Initiatives such as the ASEAN Green Hotel Standard and the ASEAN Sustainable Tourism Awards (ASTA) encourage ASEAN Member States to adopt eco-friendly practices and recognise efforts that contribute to sustainable tourism. These initiatives enhance the quality of tourism experiences and ensure that tourism development contributes positively to the well-being of local communities and the environment.

Beyond protecting the environment or boosting the economy, sustainable tourism in ASEAN is a strategic approach that enhances safety, security, and peace in the region. Sustainable tourism establishes the groundwork for a stable and harmonious ASEAN through initiatives such as environmental conservation, community empowerment, cultural preservation, infrastructure development, regional collaboration, crisis readiness, and responsible tourism practices. By advancing these efforts, ASEAN can position itself as a leading example of how tourism can contribute to a safer, more secure, and harmonious world.
