About the Artist

Donald Saluling is an artist, illustrator and graphic designer based in Jakarta, Indonesia. He was born and raised in Makassar, South Sulawesi. Donald received his double degree in Arts and Graphic Design from Portland State University in Oregon, USA. He worked as a senior graphic designer for consumer goods companies before going freelance in 2012.

In 2009, his passion for drawing and painting led him to a public community called Indonesia’s Sketchers. He learned about urban sketching as a tool for storytelling and a way to connect with the world through social media.

The illustrations on this edition’s cover depict scenes from Donald’s travels in Indonesia and throughout Southeast Asia.

Donald believes through urban sketching, he can record history and share it with the world. Donald continues to paint, draw and hold exhibits when he can. His latest one, Abstract is the New Realism, was at the Artotel Art Space Thamrin and Artotel Art Space Sanur, Bali, in 2023.
