What if a scholarship did more than fund an education? What if it helped shape perspective, strengthen regional understanding, and quietly prepare young people to give back to where they come from?

In a region as diverse and dynamic as Southeast Asia, the future of ASEAN depends not only on economic growth or political cooperation, but also on people who are educated, adaptable, and grounded in their own communities. The ASEAN-Maybank Scholarship reflects this belief. It is a purposeful investment in human potential, one that goes beyond academic achievement to nurture regional exposure, professional readiness, and long-term contribution.

Established through a partnership between Maybank Foundation—an accredited ASEAN entity—and the ASEAN Secretariat, the ASEAN-Maybank Scholarship is designed to support high-potential students from across ASEAN in pursuing tertiary education within the region. More importantly, it creates a pathway for scholars to return with knowledge, skills, and experience that can contribute meaningfully to their countries, organisations, and communities.

A scholarship with a regional perspective

Unlike many traditional scholarships, the ASEAN-Maybank Scholarship incorporates regional exposure as a core element of its design.

Each scholar is required to pursue an undergraduate course of study outside their home country, but in another ASEAN Member State. Through this experience, scholars are exposed to different education systems, cultures, and social environments across the region.

Living and studying in another ASEAN country broadens one’s perspective. Scholars learn to navigate new environments, appreciate different viewpoints, and adapt to unfamiliar settings. These experiences build confidence, cultural sensitivity, and openness, qualities that are increasingly important in today’s interconnected world.

While the academic journey spans borders, the intention is not to draw talent away. Instead, it is to enrich scholars with experiences that they can later apply in meaningful ways within the region.

From education to professional practice

A defining feature of the ASEAN-Maybank Scholarship is its clear emphasis on supporting scholars as they transition from education into the professional world.

Upon completing their studies, scholars serve a bond by taking on professional roles either within the Maybank Group or across relevant ASEAN offices and regional networks. Through these placements, scholars begin their careers in environments that allow them to apply their knowledge and skills in real-world settings that are relevant to both national and regional contexts.

This structured transition from education to employment provides stability and direction for young graduates. It enables scholars to grow professionally while contributing to organisational objectives, national development priorities, and regional cooperation.

Over time, scholars develop as professionals through their work experience. Some may progress into leadership roles within Maybank or the ASEAN network, while others may later pursue opportunities in different sectors after fulfilling their bond. Regardless of where their careers lead, they carry with them regional exposure, professional discipline, and a strong sense of responsibility shaped by their scholarship journey.

Developing professionals who give back

The ASEAN-Maybank Scholarship is guided by a simple principle: education should enable contribution.

Scholars are selected not only based on academic excellence, but also for their potential, resilience, and motivation to grow. Throughout their studies and early careers, they develop technical knowledge, professional skills, and personal confidence.

When scholars take on roles within Maybank Group or ASEAN offices regionally, they bring more than qualifications. They contribute new perspectives, share knowledge gained from their regional exposure, and apply diverse approaches to problem-solving. In doing so, they strengthen teams and organisations while building their own professional capabilities.

In essence, the scholarship benefits not just the individual recipients but also drives organisational growth through knowledge transfer and capability building.

Supporting quality education and sustainable development

The ASEAN-Maybank Scholarship supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Sustainable Development Goal 4 on Quality Education, which promotes inclusive and equitable education and lifelong learning opportunities.

By enabling access to tertiary education across ASEAN, the programme helps develop human capital essential to sustainable economic and social progress. It also supports Sustainable Development Goal 8 on Decent Work and Economic Growth through structured employment pathways, and Sustainable Development Goal 17 on Partnerships for the Goals through collaboration between regional institutions and the private sector.

These outcomes reflect a practical approach to sustainability, one that links education directly to employability and contribution.

Aligned with ASEAN’s Socio-Cultural Vision

The scholarship aligns with the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) Blueprint 2025 and the newly launched ASCC Strategic Plan, both of which indicate a strong commitment to human capital development, people-to-people connectivity, and a stronger sense of ASEAN identity.

By encouraging students to study within the region and contribute professionally through regional and national roles, the programme supports ASEAN’s aspiration to simultaneously narrow development gaps and foster mutual understanding within and among Member States. Scholars build regional awareness through study, work, and daily interaction across cultures and markets. The sense of connection and community thus becomes a lived experience rather than abstract ideals.

Why this matters for the region?

ASEAN’s strength lies in its diversity. Harnessing that diversity requires people who are comfortable working across cultures, open to learning, and capable of contributing within complex, interconnected environments.

The ASEAN-Maybank Scholarship helps nurture such individuals. It does not promise instant leaders or predefined outcomes. Instead, it provides opportunity, exposure, and structure, allowing scholars to grow into their roles over time.

By investing in education that is connected to professional practice and regional engagement, the programme supports a balanced and sustainable approach to talent development.

Maybank’s role in enabling the journey

With a presence in 10 ASEAN countries, Maybank is well-positioned to support this initiative. Through Maybank Foundation, scholars gain not just financial support but also opportunities to launch their careers within the Maybank Group’s regional network. The ASEAN-Maybank Scholarship reflects Maybank and ASEAN’s shared long-term commitment to developing a pool of talent within the region.
